Hotel reservations started to happen within the conversation with AI. On August 27, 2026, Google began allowing travelers to book hotels directly in Google AI Mode, the AI-powered search mode, initially only in the United States. The ten launch partners were Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Trip.com, Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Choice, and Wyndham. No independent hotels made the list.
A month later, Google published the rules for AI agents to book accommodations, and Expedia announced reservations through Muse, Meta's AI assistant. The novelty has not yet reached Brazil, but the message for bed and breakfasts and independent hotels is clear: those who do not prepare may appear in the AI response, but the reservation will go to another channel. See what has changed and what to do now.
What Google AI Mode Started to Do
In AI Mode, the traveler describes what they want, such as dates, destination, and type of hotel, and receives options with prices. The reservation is completed right there, with payment through Google Pay. The entity that charges the card, sends the confirmation, and provides support remains the hotel or the partnered OTA. According to Hotel Online, Google is not the seller of the reservation, and for now, ads do not influence the order of hotels in AI Mode.
Half of the launch partners are hotel chains with their own apps and loyalty programs. The other half are OTAs. For those without such integrations, the path to reservation within AI goes through an intermediary.
Visible, but Without Reservation: The Risk for Independent Hotels
Hotel Online summed up the problem in one sentence: visibility without reservability. AI shows your hotel, but another channel gets the transaction. The risk shifts from not being found to being found and paying a commission to receive the reservation.
Two warnings from the same article apply to any hotel. Each friction point in your direct channel is a reservation handed over to an intermediary. And different rates or information across channels teach AI to send the guest to whoever offers the clearest conditions, almost always the OTA.
What the AI Booking Rules Cover and What They Leave Out
The Google Trade Standards for AI Agents, published on September 24, cover the essentials of the sale: room type, rate, occupancy, separation between who pays and who stays, deposit now with balance due later, total price including taxes before confirmation, and marking non-refundable rates. According to Hospitality.today, the group leading these rules includes Google, Amadeus, Booking.com, Expedia, Hilton, Marriott, and Trip.com, and no independent hotels. The four open spots for other organizations were still vacant.
What was left out were reservation changes, cancellations, and check-in. According to the draft, an AI-made reservation is immutable. In other words, everything that happens after the purchase remains with the hotel, in its channel. This is where direct service gains weight: whoever handles changes, inquiries, and pre-arrival well through WhatsApp wins the guest for the next reservation, which can be direct.
Six Steps to Prepare the Independent Hotel
- Test What AI Already Says About You: ask AI assistants about your hotel and see where they send the guest to book. If the path ends at an OTA, you've found the problem;
- Complete Your Google Business Profile: verified, with amenities, check-in and check-out times, current photos, and responded reviews. This is one of the sources AI reads;
- Ask Your Booking Engine or Channel Manager: does it already send rates and availability to Google via Hotel Center? Will it connect to AI booking rules? Who appears as the seller to the guest?
- Keep Rates and Information Consistent Across All Channels: consistent prices, rules, and photos on your website, OTAs, and Google;
- Remove Friction from the Direct Channel: fast website, booking engine with clear total price, visible cancellation policy, and payment in a few clicks;
- Be Strong Where AI Doesn't: quick response, personalized quotes, and post-purchase service, with own AI on the hotel's WhatsApp 24/7.

Frequently Asked Questions About Google AI Mode
Does Google AI Mode Already Book Hotels in Brazil?
As of the publication of this article, booking within AI Mode has only been launched in the United States. However, the preparation is the same in any country.
Do I Need to Pay for Ads to Appear?
Not necessarily. Google shows reservation links without cost in the "All Options" section, and ads appear marked as "Ads." To have a price and reservation link, the hotel needs to send rates and availability through the Hotel Center, via a connectivity partner.
What is the Hotel Center?
It is Google's tool for receiving hotel rates and availability. Integration is done by a connectivity partner, such as a booking engine, channel manager, PMS, or reservation system. According to Google Help, direct integration is currently unavailable due to high demand.
AI will change where the guest starts their search, but the reservation is still decided by who responds best and with the clearest conditions. DeskHotel combines AI, WhatsApp, quotes, CRM, and booking engine into a single platform, from click to payment.
